Cost in Volusia County: $5,000–$15,000; mound or elevated fields at the top of that range. The spread is not random. Conventional gravity fields in good soil sit at the bottom; engineered systems the soil forces on you sit at the top.
How it goes
- Site evaluation by the county — soil, water table, setbacks. This determines what you're allowed to build.
- Design and permit. The contractor submits; the county approves. Budget time for this step.
- Installation — excavation, new lines or engineered unit, backfill. One to three days on site.
- Final inspection before the system goes back into service.
Florida requires separation between the bottom of the drain field and the seasonal high water table, and on the lagoon side of this county the original field often never really had it — which is why replacements there are frequently raised, as a mound or an engineered fill system, and why the top of the price range exists. Before any of that matters, establish which rule reaches the parcel. Inside a springs priority focus area on a lot of an acre or less, a replacement cannot be permitted as a conventional field at all: it has to reach 65 percent nitrogen reduction, at $10,000–$20,000 installed, before any grant. Inside the lagoon program area the same standard applies to a full replacement ahead of the 2030 date.
