Volusia Septic

Aerobic treatment unit (ATU) service in Volusia County

An ATU is a small mechanical treatment plant: an air pump feeds oxygen into a treatment chamber so aerobic bacteria break waste down far more completely than a conventional tank. Cleaner effluent, smaller footprint, higher nitrogen removal — and moving parts that need attention.

CONVENTIONAL ATU — AEROBIC TREATMENT UNIT full-size drain field ~30% nitrogen removed air pump smaller field 65%+ nitrogen removed
An ATU removes more than twice the nitrogen of a conventional tank, and needs a smaller field.

Services

  • Scheduled maintenance visits (typically twice yearly) and the required service records
  • Air pump / blower diagnosis and replacement — pumps last 5–10 years, the maintenance contract is the typical operating cost including the permit
  • Alarm response: a blinking or sounding alarm usually means the air pump has stopped; the system reverts to anaerobic treatment within days if it isn't fixed
  • Effluent quality checks and float/dosing adjustments
  • Pumping — an ATU still accumulates solids

Aerobic units are becoming common here for two separate reasons. On the west side, a repair permit inside the DeLeon, Volusia Blue or Gemini priority focus areas on a lot of an acre or less now requires a system reaching at least 65 percent nitrogen reduction, and that has been the rule since June 27, 2025. On the southeast side, the lagoon program sets a July 2030 date for the same standard. Two things to know before you buy one. Florida requires the unit to be under an active maintenance contract with an approved provider for the life of the system — it is a rule, not a suggestion. And an aerobic unit still needs pumping; the maintenance visit does not replace it. If the machine and the annual commitment are what you are dreading, ask about an in-ground nitrogen-reducing biofilter instead — same standard, no blower. The maintenance contract in full

Common brands serviced: Clearstream, Jet, Norweco, Hoot, Fuji Clean and other units approved for Florida. Installation and warranty work require manufacturer certification beyond the standard contractor license — ask which brands your contractor is certified on.
